Red Clay Crown

Tupelo Dust

Born in the land of the King, north Mississippi heat

Every landmark's got his name stamped on the concrete

Grew up where a shotgun shack is holy, sacred ground

The echo of a legend is the town's most common sound

I was just a little kid with a black and white TV

Saw that black-haired boy shakin', and a part of him was me

First crush I ever had, a rock and roll daydream

A rebel yell that somehow set a million spirits free.

And it's the same Tupelo dust on my boots that was on his shoes

The same sticky summer air that sings the blues

He shook up the whole wide world with a sneer and a song

And in his shadow, I've been learning to be strong

Yeah, a poor boy from this nowhere town can make the planet shake

That's a heavy-hittin' legacy, for goodness gracious sake.

But the King, he didn't learn that rhythm all on his own

He had the soul of Big Mama Thornton rattlin' in his bones

The ghost of Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup in the swagger and the heat

The Sunday morning gospel choir and the pain from Beale Street

He was a vessel for the magic that was already there

The Black American soundtrack floatin' on the Delta air

He just opened up the door and let the whole wide world inside

Gave the sound a different face, had nothin' left to hide.

Now it's October 2025, and I'm makin' my own sound

With an 808 and a microphone on this same haunted ground

He mixed the country with the blues, made the whole world stop and stare

I'm mixin' trap and soul now, 'cause the rebellion's in the air

The spirit of this muddy patch of dirt will never die

It just finds another restless voice to lift up to the sky

So I'll wear this crown of red clay, raise my voice and sing my truth

'Cause I've got that same fire... and the same immortal youth.
